We started at a bus stop on the edge of Warsaw and got our first ride pretty quick. We got dropped off 40 km down the road. The next spot wasn’t great and we were slowly melting in the burning sun. An hour later we hitched a ride with a bus to Wyszkow where we got off in the middle of town. On the way there Dr. Phil saw something: ‘Hey guys, I saw this amazing beach under the bridge over there.’ A great idea entered my mind: ice cream, beer, and swimming. The holy trinity!
We went over to the nearest supermarket and walked about 15 minutes toward the beach while eating our ice cream. When you get down to the river you will see a beach packed with human beings, however, when you go under the bridge toward the right side you will find an amazingly large and empty beach with just a few people. The sun showered us with its burning rays while we walked. We dropped our bags somewhere on planet Earth and liberated our bodies from our clothing. I found a frog so when I went over to the riverside Phil and Shane were already in the water with their beer. I gave Shane a frog and sat down in the water. The next moments are pure bliss. We said cheers and lay down in the water. The river is fast flowing but very shallow. You have the sensation of floating away while you lay in the warm yet refreshing stream. Beer has never tasted this good. We stayed for about an hour or more before we got out. Honestly, I think we could have stayed there the whole day and just set up camp somewhere in the bushes. We all felt reborn and at peace.
We walked about half an hour toward the highway and waited for another half hour before getting picked up by a local. He told us it is better to go back over the bridge and get a ride on the main road toward the highway rather than on the highway itself. He dropped us off at a petrol station and from there we got several short rides. While the friendly Polish sun was deciding to end the day we were hanging around a deserted petrol station near Bialystok. Shane and Phil were standing on the highway while I was asking the few cars at the gas station for a ride. I was wondering if I not only travelled a great distance with my body but also within myself when Phil and Shane managed to stop the smallest car on Earth. The driver was already trying to figure out how they would fit with their backpacks and random stuff: guitar, bongo, camera, small backpack, mattress and shopping bag. I came over with a smile on my face. He realized it was actually gonna be three people with three backpacks and with a very puzzled look said: ‘O, kurwa.’
Amazingly we managed to squeeze everyone and everything in our clown car. We got the last ride at another petrol station to our host’s house. There we had some time before the host arrived so we decided to go to the supermarket. We passed the time by still not shutting up about how amazing lying in the river was and playing on our instruments. We were having cookies and beer for dinner when our host arrived guided by our music.
